Bush Big 3 Auto Maker Bailout
$17.4 billion For UAW
President Bush let America down with the Big 3 Auto maker bailout. It doesn’t help the American taxpayer, like so many of the prior bailouts. It doesn’t help anyone but the UAW. The $17.4 billion is for the UAW. Paulson was right the only way out for the Big 3 auto makers is an orderly bankruptcy. The UAW refuses to make any real concessions and bankruptcy will force the needed concessions. Giving them $17.4 billion dollars and then telling them they have 3 months to become viable or pay it back is nothing short of ludicrous. They have not been profitable for years and now in 3 months they should be and we will expect payback. Trust this folks, we will not see a dime back.
President Bush said the auto manufacturers have faced serious challenges for many years: burdensome costs, a shrinking share of the market and plunging profits. "In recent months, the global financial crisis has made these challenges even more severe," he said. What is severe Mr. President is the burdensome costs that the UAW puts on the automakers and your bailout doesn’t make the UAW do anything.
The President said that on the one hand, the government has a responsibility not to undermine the private enterprise system, yet on the other hand, it must safeguard the broader health and stability of the U.S. economy. "If we were to allow the free market to take its course now, it would almost certainly lead to disorderly bankruptcy and liquidation for the automakers," he said. No, President Bush it would mean trimming every bit of excess fat in the company like every other company has been doing for months now. It would mean the UAW was out and wages and benefits would be brought in line with the other auto manufacturers. Not inflated $30 an hour more in wages and benefits than others.
"Under ordinary economic circumstances, I would say this is the price that failed companies must pay," the President said. "And I would not favor intervening to prevent the automakers from going out of business. But these are not ordinary circumstances. "
"In the midst of a financial crisis and a recession, allowing the U.S. auto industry to collapse is not a responsible course of action."
We disagree, President Bush it is the only course of action that will work. The only way without government takeover for the auto makers to survive is reorganization under bankruptcy. It is the only way that they will trim what they must in order to do business.
We have to stop the bailout lunacy. Someone has got to stop putting America deeper and deeper in debt while improving nothing. If OUR government really wants to help America then give Americans OUR money with a tax holiday. Yes it is a novel approach, letting Americans spend THEIR own money and not allowing Congress to waste OUR money and we need to try it.
